Day 7

The Scripture

Honor Adonai with your wealth and with the first of your entire harvest. Then your barns will be filled with plenty, your vats will overflow with new wine.  – Proverbs 3:9-10

Heart Thought

Have you ever watched a new story that highlights a clergy member who has done something notorious? Or have you ever watched a television show that throws skepticism on whether or not God even exists.  Have you ever been in a conversation where people dismiss the Bible as mere fable and fancy?  I am sure we have all seen or heard something like this.  The effect of these negative reports can cause even the strongest of believers to decrease in matters of faith. To decrease their confidence in God’s promises. Don’t let that be you today, tomorrow or the next day.

In Jewish tradition we have a saying:

מַעֲלִין בַּקֹּדֶשׁ וְאֵין מוֹרִידִין
ma'alin baqqodesh ve'en moridin
We increase and do not decrease in matters of holiness – Jewish Wisdom

This particular saying came out of a discussion between two rabbis on the lighting of the Chanukah menorah. The sages were trying to figure out why we light a new candle each night rather than lighting all eight on the first night and then extinguishing one each additional night until there are no more candles. The sages decided that when it comes to matters of faith and holiness that we increase and we do not decrease.

Don’t let the skeptics, the one bad apple or the coffee bar conversation cause you to decrease in matters of faith. No, raise up in matters of faith.  When the Bible says something will be then you need to raise your confidence that it will be.  When Solomon, the wealthiest King of Israel, says that there will be plenty and that there will be an overflow of God’s blessing in response to your tithes and offerings don’t decrease your faith but increase your faith. Declare boldly that you will have all the Bible says you will have and that settles the matter. For every one story that you hear that decreases you in matters of faith, rehearse ten of God’s promises, spend more time reciting the record of His goodness in your life and the lives of others, give a good report about God and rise up in matters of faith! Declare boldly, “God will deliver one what He says I will have from his Word!”

Prayer

May the Lord God of Israel cause you to always increase in matters of faith and holiness. May the Lord God fill you to overflowing so that each day you will light one more candle of faith to increase and never to decrease. May our God continuously supply you with your every need and give you bold confidence to declare His good and faithful promises over you life even when others are speaking in doubt.

For the Feed

We increase and do not decrease in matters of holiness (Jewish Wisdom, Shabbat 21b).
