Day 16

The Scripture

For the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil—some, longing for it, have gone astray from the faith and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.

Heart Thoughts

The Madoff investment scandal was a major case of stock and securities fraud discovered in late 2008. When this Ponzi scheme came to light what puzzled so many people was the one question, “How were so many people blind to this 50 billion-dollar Ponzi scheme?”  How was the government so blind to it? Why didn’t investors ever wonder how Madoff kept pulling off substantial returns on a regular basis.  It's virtually impossible to have returns like Madoff reported, and it should have been a major warning signal to anyone involved with him.

The effects of the Madoff Ponzi were felt like a 1-ton boulder thrown in a three-gallon bucket. It shook the American markets. Devastated and even shut down business, charitable organizations and thousands of families lost their entire financial portfolio.  Many high-level investors wrapped-up in this scheme either took their own lives or faced long sentences in jails. For weeks and months, the headlines were filled with stories of those who were pierced through with many sorrows.

Looking back, we know that the love of money is what motivated Madoff but we also know it is what blinded some and caused others to turn and look the other way. Rabbi Paul is right: the love of money is a chief sin. In Jewish tradition we call these “avot” sins. They are sins so large that they contain within them the seeds for so many other evil things.  So, to be trapped by this love of money is to also be trapped by a host of all kinds, notice the plural, of evil.

The only way to deal with the love of money is to have a relationship with God that keeps you focused on righteousness, love, joy, kindness and gentleness. You have to have a counter to this love. In other words, the love of God is the root of all kinds of spiritual fruit and righteousness.  Only this love, can kill the love of money, uproot it and be strong enough to keep it from taking root in the heart.

That is what the Father offers everyone who believes in His Son. He offers you the opportunity to be dead to sin and alive to God through the Messiah Yeshua. He offers you to live as a victor and not a prisoner, as the one in control not the one under control, to be the head and not the tail.  That all starts by deeply surrendering your life to Yeshua and his lordship.

Prayer

May the Lord God of Israel give you victory today to make the love of God the chief love of your heart. May the cleansing power of His love radically re-orient how you see money, how you use money and give you such incredible victory that the love of money never has control over you, your family or your future.
