Day 9

The Scripture

The one who blesses others is abundantly blessed; those who help others are helped. - Proverbs 11:25

Heart Thoughts

It is easy to think that the best way to get further faster is by watching out for your own personal interest ahead of everyone else.  When times are time it is easy to become ingrown and start to think, "Right now things are good and I need my needs to be met, my battle to be fought, my dreams fulfilled."  The natural man is always seeking to put the self-first, the "I" in front of everything.

The Scriptures describe a very different way of living. It is the reverse way to get ahead further faster.  Rather than running to go get to the front of the line, you are running to get to the back of the line. Rather than trying to first, tops, pre-eminent you are seeking to make others first, top and pre-eminent.  Rather than looking for other people to help you, you are looking for every opportunity to help others.  As hard and self-sacrificial as this sounds, the Scriptures say this is the path towards God's blessing.

The ancient Jewish sages said in Mezudath David that, "Since this person look for the good of other people, they, too, will receive that good."  This is so much more than just paying it forward, or giving to get.  The Hebrew Bible that stands behind this English text literally says, "a soul of blessing" which simply means this is an attitude that characterizes this person not just a behavior they do from time-to-time. Since this person is constantly looking out for way to bless and drench other people they can expect with certainty that God will respond favorably to their generous attitude.

2 Kings 5 portrays an unnamed prisoner of war who displays this attitude. She was an Israeli who was taken as a war slave by the hated Syrian General Naaman. No doubt she was taken from her mom, dad and siblings, her home, her country from all that was familiar to her. She was taken by force and made a slave to her enemy.  Her enemy now her owner – Naaman – had contracted leprosy.  She could have thought to herself, "Good and my he rot and die."  Rather, she told Naaman that there was a prophet in Israel by the name of Elisha who could heal him.  She blessed and she helped someone in need when it was the hardest.  Her actions no doubt reaped a reward for her life but it also changed the relationship between Israel and the Syrians for the better.

Today, you have the ability to be a blessing to someone, to help someone.  You have the Holy Spirit living inside of you and you can make a positive, lasting impact on someone.  Right now, you can speak a word of peace, of life, of comfort or exhortation to someone. Right now, you can buy someone a meal, pay for someone groceries or even do something greater that could re-direct the course of their whole life for the better.  This is not paying it forward, this is because you are a "soul of blessing." You are born-again and you have the ability to bless just like your heavenly Father blesses. When your heavenly Father sees you are a blessing like He is a blessing you can be certain that He will reward you for your generosity to others.

Prayer

May you be a "soul of blessing." May our internal life be characterized by thinking about the good of other people. May you step out in faith today and believe that God loves your generosity and loves it when you are a blessing just as He is blessing. May you experience the good pleasure of the Lord and his blessing on your life as you bless others.
